Rules for Pricing Your Fashion Designs
A lot of beginning designers new to the fashion world, come to me with an inspired design idea they want to reproduce and sell for the same price they are used to seeing and buying it for. Seems Legit Right?
This is a flawed premise.
Here’s Why: If you are not a well funded brand with the volume buying power of huge production runs and sales infrastructure in place to support this pricing, believing you can accomplish this price, without all of that, is quite frankly delusional. Here is a simple equation that is the industry standard for pricing garments.
1. Establish your cost of goods and labor including everything it takes to make an item. Be realistic. Lying to yourself here throws everything else off.
2. Multiply your Cost x 2 to get to a wholesale price. This is a double your money number that still keeps you profitable if you sell it to someone else in volume so they can sell it at a profit.
3. Multiply your Cost x 4 to get to a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) with enough wiggle room in it to use coupon codes and promotions meant to get the consumer closer to your intended price without compromising the perceived value of your design.
If you can achieve a higher MSRP with good marketing and branding, then you’re GOLDEN!
If there is a huge gap between your COST and your target sale price then you need to rethink your business plan, get yourself out of the bargain bin and take a real world look at what it’s going to take to get to your goal.
